Strategic planning is about identifying where you want your business to be at an identified point in the future, and how you are going to go about getting there, along a timeline. You may well get to that point by following a less defined course of action, but it might take you 10 years to get to that same point that you could have got to in 5 years, had you shaped a deliberate course of action.

The most common reason for developing a strategic plan is the aspiration for growth. But planning could also be needed in response to changes in business practice, the economy, the environment or your own personal lifestyle needs. Or it could be to protect against future competitive forces. So planning could be needed in response to positive or negative factors.
